I think there's a demo version of Minecraft that's free to download, but it limits you to a single world for about an hour before telling you to buy the real thing iirc.

At first I thought the demo was only on Xbox; does appear to be a demo version on the PC (you need a Mojang account to access it though).

He said a "free launcher", however. That makes me suspect he downloaded a cracked version.
