Laws against hate speech and 'offensive' language are always a bad idea because the border between 'offensive hate speech' and legitimate political/social dissent (or joke videos about national socialist dogs) is often gray or altogether non-existent.
This is pretty much the worst part of American liberalism (coming from myself, a liberal). As more people try to curate thought and discussion on the basis of other people's feelings, we're going to have more and more difficulty confronting and solving social problems to begin with. What I see happening, with this massive political push to create universities and social media networks with 'curated', 'safe' content, is that people with backwards ideals may be forced out of the discussion and have their voices silenced, but their beliefs won't go away. All that will happen is that censored bigots will find other bigots to share their ideals with, in places like /pol/ that are just as insular as tumblr. They'll also find political candidates that are able to voice their ignorance to the masses, which is why we have Annoying Orange.
In other words, people aren't going to be willing to change their views unless you allow them to argue their points, even if they come off as hateful, ignorant, and 'offensive'.
You can't deny the same thinking is happening all across the continent
Europe is so weird. With all the laws on hate speech, you'd imagine that it's a widely progressive kind of place. But if you look closer, nearly the entire continent is tribal as hell. By that, I mean the societies themselves, not every single person that lives in Europe. Not trying to generalize any friendly European Blocklanders.
