The problem is that the stupidest stuff ever can be twisted in such a way to absolutely destroy a person.

For example, outing a politician or a holder of public office as homoloveual (whether true or not) by "leaking" gathered online conversations can absolutely destroy their chances of being elected to a public office. Gathered information does not have to be illegal in order to harm a person or entity.

Fun fact, the FBI tried to do this to MLK by blackmailing him with private information of his infidelities. It didn't work, thankfully.

Exactly. And a politician being blackmailed affects everyone. If our government was some kind of super corrupt Orwellian military state then agencies like the NSA could work behind the scenes to blackmail politicians/destroy political careers to maintain the status quo.
