The defensive at Tampico was started in the middle of the day of April 13, 1863. While on the outskirts of the city, a group of multiple crews of sappers spotted some lines of Mexican infantry in the distance, and opened fire onto them with their cannons. The whole city was alerted of their presence, and line infantry and Calvary were also sent out to the front to dispatch them.

The French military influence in the city was around 1,600 trained men, against 1,300 opposition. The battle is still ongoing to this very moment.
