it's scientifically a mental illness but it's not at the same magnitude as say, sociopathy or insanity. It's more like high functioning aspergers or anxiety disorder. Those 'illnesses' don't limit that much of what you can do in life, but do require a little bit of attention. People with those disorders are allowed to serve in the military and operate machinery, etc etc.

all that's happening rn are cultural changes. there's no science to be talked about, gender dysphoria and trans people have always existed, the problem people really have is that cultural standards and symbols around gender are changing to accommodate these things, and as with any shift in the status quo, there's natural resistance from people who just aren't as willing to accept the changes. the idea that individuals should be understood as having a gender identity separate from their assigned love has little to do with biology and everything to do with sociology
