The short of it is that direct democracy is unstable and unfair for the minority. The concept is called "tyranny of the majority" and the idea goes that if a large enough faction can control the government then they will only act in their own interests rather than the interests of others. The electoral college seeks to mitigate the problem by taking population (or rather, direct population) out of the equation so that lower population areas have more equal power to higher population areas.
