Massive Fire in Rhodesburg
  • A large fire burned out several blocks in Rhodesburg last week. The Minister of Public Safety's Office issued a statement on the event earlier this week, citing poor infrastructure, flagrant violation of building codes, and the crowded conditions as reasons for why the fire was particularly devastating. "The overcrowding and underdevelopment of Rhodesburg poses health risks to the population, previous efforts have been ineffective, and so we must take more stringent measures," the MoPS's office stated.

Next week the Minister of Public Safety, as well as the Minister of Law and the City Manager will convene to discuss solutions to the problem.

Elena texts the group, offering a new job and a meeting place. Those who are interested and attending find themselves in a high-bay machine shop near the Pig Iron District. Norum, Ryde, and Daniel know the location. Elena is well dressed, as if she's about to go out clubbing. Her demeanor is a bit off, and she seems a bit rushed. The group is gathered around a round table on the shop floor. There are cans of cheap beer on the table.

"Thanks for turning up, let's start. The lab stuff came back from the house we looked at a couple weeks ago. I built some profiles up on the folks who were at that house, using that medical database breach that you probably heard about to get names and addresses and whatnot. We should be able to corroborate their experience with the information I dug up on the doctor we're looking at, so that we know we're looking at the right guy. It's nothing difficult, as long as they give a good description of their experience. And don't worry about remembering it all, I've got a couple mics you can use,"

Elena puts some papers on the table and spreads them out. Her tone is a bit flatter than usual.

"We've got one guy from Pig Iron, one guy from Rhodesburg, and one girl from Carmichael oddly enough. These are our best bets.

The Pig Iron guy's name is Pedro Peyton, works as a shipbreaker. He was injured some kind of accident, lost his arm months ago. He's 23, got his job back, and likes to frequent a pub not far from here. In fact, he's there now. He also seems to like cars.

The Rhodesburg guy is Chima Bishop, he's 45, and African emigrant worker. If I had to guess he got suckered in to moving here for work and can't leave. He's been here a while. Does menial labor. The medical database says he had both legs crushed by heavy machinery. It doesn't mention anything about replacements, but I know he's got them because there are pictures of him up and around on social media. He... should be at a work site right now. I can give his location in a minute.

The Carmichael lady is Catalina Kerrigan. She's 31, a low level office worker in Salus, seems to like to go clubbing. Has a cadre of friends with her usually, so you might have to go through them. She's at a club called the Arctic Circle, in Midtown Central sub-district. Her medical data shows nothing out of the ordinary. She had something done to her though, because her DNA was at the house we looked at. Last I saw was that she filled a prescription for pain meds,"

Elena looks around.

"That was a lot to run by you, sorry. You can figure out to run this however you want. I can't go with you guys, unfortunately. Questions, anyone?"

"Yeah, uh, where are you headed all spiffed up?"

"Thats not very important right now, Daniel.", Ryde looks up briefly at Elena, before continuing. "What I'd like to figure out is the girl. From what I can tell, shes been trying to get more money to get out of her low-level job.", Ryde presses a finger onto the woman's paperwork. "She seems like the oddball, and the sooner we figure her out, I reckon we get our reason for why the other two were there."

Ryde returns his hand to a folded position in front of him on the table. "I can feel we're getting some semblance of close to the doctor... As soon as I get my forgeted up arm on him--", Ryde spits out his words as he starts to rabble, you could feel the italics in his voice there, but he calms himself. "Sorry, just... Putting my opinion on the table. In any case, for me, I'd want to get to the doctor as soon as possible..." Ryde lifts up his sleeve. "...I think he owes us all a debt."

"Yeah, uh, where are you headed all spiffed up?"

"We- err, I am out of money and have some bills coming in soon. I have card readers in my fingers so going out and scanning cards is a way of making money,"

Elena looks a bit confused.

"Christ dude, we're getting there. And what makes you so interested in the girl?"

"Again, we dont know why shes there, and from what I understand, shes more-or-less a clue for... Somethin' I dont know."

Norum groans, massaging both of his temples with his index and middle fingers and turns to Ryde, "It's not an issue. We'll find out when we get there. Any other questions?"

"How do you want to divide it up? You could probably all split and go meet each person on your own, I'd say going as a group of three might overwhelm someone if you're not careful,"

Norum thinks for a moment before speaking up, "How about we rotate. We'll put Ryde in for Peyton and Kerrigan, since he seems to be taking such an interest. Daniel, you take Peyton and Bishop, and I'll take Kerrigan and Peyton? Each remaining person would be outside or within close proximity. I don't think there'd be any necessity to look out for police or some gang, and I don't think that containing them would be a problem either, but it would thin out the numbers in regards to confronting them and still have someone nearby just in case.

Sound good?"

     "I'm a little confused, who's doing what?"

"Elena was rightly concerned that we'd be appear too confrontational by having all three of us approach one person at once. We're on rotation, keeping one person out each time."

"Uuuh, right..." Daniel said.  He shrugged afterward, "Yeah, I guess that makes sense... I'm good with whatever."

The three of you depart for Midtown. You approach the club on foot. The streets are busy with people out shopping, out looking for entertainment, bar crawling, the works.

The Arctic Circle is situated in a dark glass building. It's clean walls shimmering in the light. The logo above the bar glitters against the blackness of the exterior. You can hear a cacophony of thunderous, pounding club music coming from the exterior.  The top of the structure is pitched to one side. An upper deck is visible, and is quite packed. At the door is a short line, with two titanic bouncers checking ID's. You enter the line and quickly arrive at the front.

"Three of ya? ID's please," the bouncer checking asks.

The bouncers eye Norum with suspicion.

Ryde shows his identification to the bouncer.
