Author Topic: refugees in sweden are magically """"comatose"""" when informed of deportation  (Read 6675 times)

The mission volunteers help coordinate the efforts we lead in constructing the homes. These are not shanty houses we are constructing here. They are actual engineering projects that island natives cannot simply do all by themselves
Are you asserting that there are no construction workers in all of Haiti who could be paid far less than plane-fare for 25 volunteers to build a house?

The bulk of volunteers who go are not paid to do so. They go entirely on their own desire to help.
That's not the problem here. The problem is that sending them to Haiti and paying for room&board costs money that could probably be used in a far, far more efficient fashion.

No, man, Haiti doesn't have construction workers

Hell, Haitian construction workers are probably cheap as stuff. The currency there is worth far less than a dollar, and being an impoverished nation, a dollar probably has crazy purchasing power. You could probably have an entire house built for the cost of sending a single volunteer on a plane.

Not only that, but then you've got Haitians who have jobs and wages. That's good for an economy that must stand on its own two feet.

I forgot to mention that the volunteers not only are not paid, they have to pay to go, in order to help cover the cost of taking them.

Seventh, if you have ideas as to how they can do better at what they're doing, perhaps you should contact them and let them know.

You should give them a call tomorrow or shoot them an email tonight and let me know what they have to say about the points you raised.

Sharing the gospel with lost people is always the first priority of a Christian
The first priority of anyone should be to help others meet their basic needs for survival, including health food and shelter. All spiritual beliefs and self-actualization should happen later, once the person is being given the necessities of survival without pain

Religion and belief are personal and differ from one to another, but physical wellbeing is universal. You can go on for hours about how you're right or other people are wrong, or how everyone is right or we should just get along etc etc, but arguing won't improve someone else's health. If you want to be altruistic you'd know that safety comes above all else

So planr, how do I pray to get money into my bank account? I'm broke and profit would make my life better

To be fair, the missionary work still does benefits. Any help is better than no help

Better yet, I'll donate money to an organization that is moreso concerned with the status of a Haitian soul pre-death/judgement-by-God.

Build Change is an organization which provides training to people in developing nations, such as Nepal and Haiti, in order to help them build better houses and improve infrastructure. They also use the money to help people improve technology in block-building and housing-construction to better withstand earthquakes.

But notably, browse their website and you'll find absolutely no invitations for unskilled, random teenagers looking to 'make the world a better place' by getting a free expensive plane ticket and going to 'help build houses'. Their volunteer page asks for an actual construction engineer with a degree in the field. This is what effective altruism looks like.
