Gender dysphoria is indeed a mental illness, and it is indeed a prerequisite for being trans. I really don't get why people feel the need to go the extra mile and try to say otherwise. Either you have a legitimate mental illness that can be cured through love change therapy/surgery, or you're just loving around and think being a tomboy means you're nonbinary or some other bullstuff.
I do disagree that you need dysphoria to be trans, but even if that were true, many legitimately trans people transition in different ways - some go all the way and do HRT and love change surgery, some just do hormones or only some surgery, and some simply use clothes/makeup. Obviously not all of these cost as much as cosmetic surgery and hormone therapy, but even the most expensive option isn't prohibitively expensive.
Here's the criteria for gender dysphoria from the DSM-V:
In adolescents and adults gender dysphoria diagnosis involves a difference between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, and significant distress or problems functioning. It lasts at least six months and is shown by at least two of the following:
A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and primary and/or secondary love characteristics
A strong desire to be rid of one’s primary and/or secondary love characteristics
A strong desire for the primary and/or secondary love characteristics of the other gender
A strong desire to be of the other gender
A strong desire to be treated as the other gender
A strong conviction that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender
If you live in an environment where you feel safe/fit in despite your atypical gender identity/expression, would you have a reason to feel significant distress about transitioning?
This is corroborated by the
American Psychological Association: (under "Is being transgender a mental disorder?")
A psychological state is considered a mental disorder only if it causes significant distress or disability. Many transgender people do not experience their gender as distressing or disabling, which implies that identifying as transgender does not constitute a mental disorder.
If you look at the chart, you will see that psychologists are basically glorified high-school dropouts; they are right next to elementary education majors. I'm glad they left the REAL science for the smarter ones.
If you knew anything about psychology you'd understand that IQ is not a reliable indicator of intelligence. Regardless of how well psychology majors can do abstract logic problems or whatever, psychology is a science, performed with adherence to the scientific method.
< Blinding yourself with drain cleaner because you identify as a blind person is a clear indication of mental illness
< Amputating yourself by injecting turds into your knees because you identify as an amputee is a clear indication of mental illness
< Cutting your richard and balls off because you identity as a(n) ??????? is totally fine and completely normal
Why is it that the only thing all these LGBTQ folk have in common is that none of them can breed? (spoiler: eugenics)
If you don't see the difference between heedlessly mutilating yourself and undergoing a cosmetic surgery which has been regarded as one of the best means of treatment after 50 years of research, I don't think there's a point in arguing
