bold claim considering the fact we've already learned that air force non-compliance with standard gun regulations is why this person was able to get a gun

Well, he was stopped by a legally armed civilian...

It doesn't seem that bold of a claim at all to me to say that, if that armed civilian wasn't armed, he wouldn't have been able to stop him as easily.

This is part of what gun advocates have been saying for a while now: gun control laws strip law abiding citizens, but not criminals. The fact that the shooter was able to pass a background check certainly exposes a flaw in the system that needs to be addressed, but it does not change the fact that he was not legally allowed to own firearms

Yes, what the Air Force did (or didn't do) is a problem. And that's what should be addressed here.

I fully support violent criminals not having access to guns. But I'm not convinced any more gun control laws would help. I'm open to hearing ideas (specific ideas, not just "more gun control!!" I'm still awaiting an answer to my inquiries on page 3) but I can't support passing more/stricter laws when we can't enforce the laws we already have.

get a really big magnet that only attracts guns like in that cyanide and happiness video

i think what sev was implying was that if gun control would have been a little bit more strict and completely denied the dishonorably discharged air force guy a firearm he wouldn't have been able to shoot up a church.

so what legislation would you suggest? redundant laws that state that the air force should follow its own rules? banning assault rifles, which would've prevented civilian intervention? there is no way at all that this could have been prevented with more legislation, considering that the whole reason that this happened was a guy with some gears to grind against a church was able to get a gun because of a logistical error

the most that can and should happen is that some air force officials get tried for negligence, much less sacked immediately

I think we're all agreeing on the same thing here, just wording it differently.

The air force failed to file whatever they were supposed to, and that needs to be fixed so it can't happen again.

But the gun control laws themselves, in their current state, already made it illegal for him to own the gun. His background check falsely coming back clear doesn't change the fact that it was illegal for him to own the gun. Stronger vetting on who can own guns wouldn't have made a difference when a) the current laws already vetted him, but b) he was failed to be registered in the database or whatever

the most that can and should happen is that some air force officials get tried for negligence, much less sacked immediately
This, plus some review to make sure it hasn't happened on other occasions, plus maybe some more oversight or process reform to ensure it can't happen again

I can guarantee that it wouldn't have stopped him from illegally acquiring a gun. This guy wasn't stupid.
