Haf Gengr Hriðum  — 'The Storm-Driven Sea', by Christopher Tin.

Every traveller by sea dreads it; it's any navigator's worst nightmare. And it happened to you. A great storm, the likes of which you've never seen before ends your once calm voyage, and your ship is tossed over the sea for three long days. When it seems like the storm would never subside, you wake up, your boat run aground and most, if not all the crew dead or lost. But where are you? There's no telling where you are, and no way to return from where you came. The land ahead of you is unknown to you, perhaps filled with many dangers. Will you perish in helplessness, or will you rise to the challenge and conquer this mighty land?

You play as a person who is stranded on this land As you are faced with challenges, you have the liberty to overcome them in whichever way you believe your character can accomplish. For sake of simplicity, your character comes from a fictional Europe, or 'ficto-Europe'. You may choose from where in ficto-Europe your character hails and how this culminates in their culture, but know that for sake of simplicity, your character must speak 1 language from the following: 'Proto-Germanic', 'Proto-Celtic', 'Proto-Slavic' or 'Romano-Hellenic'. In this game, it's important that no one can abuse or bend rules to claim an unfair advantage. Thank you in advance for being respectful of other players and mods.

  • Rules Last updated on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 13:00:37 (Pacific Standard Time).
  • No metagaming. Try to motivate your character's actions only by what they can perceive.
  • Over the course of the game, players will learn information that is made available to them, either by public post, private messages or messages on an external services, but that their character did not see. This is metagaming. Your character will need to discover these things.
  • No powergaming. See the next 4 below.
  • You cannot dismiss conditions. Ex: If you are on fire, the fire will not magically go away because you say that it does. You need to have your character extinguish themselves. A moderator will post to indicate if you are successful or not.
  • You cannot dismiss injuries. Ex: If you have a broken leg, you either can either walk on that leg with intense pain or not walk on it at all. A moderator will clarify the severity of the injury to help you cope with it.
  • You cannot dismiss wildlife in pursuit of you or after which you are in pursuit. You can attempt to get away from an animal or to chase down an animal, but once again, your degree of success or failure will be indicated by a moderator in a reply.
  • You cannot auto-hit. You can aim to strike, but unless your chances of hitting are beyond reasonable doubt, (Such as swinging an axe at a tree or dealing a killing blow to an incapacitated animal), then a moderator will indicate your degree of success or failure.
  • You cannot auto-find. For objects that would give you an advantage, you may not 'auto-procure' them. Indicate that you search for something and a moderator will give you the results.
  • In recognizing that players & characters are two different things, we please ask that even if something bad happens to your character, that you not make a scene about a player. Handle disputes outside of the topic, please.
  • Please do not spam the thread. This is a serious RP. If you are not a player in the game, please do not post unless you are very likely to join.
  • The game rewards players who post often, inquire about details, and exercise caution. We therefore encourage players to post consistently in order to have the best chance of survival. Since the game is on an semi-active timescale, the game does not have mercy on those who neglect to post, especially if they are at risk of harm or death.
  • If you are going to be unavailable for definite periods of time, for instance for a vacation, family or personal emergency, or have need to study and take exams for school, you may ask a moderator to have your character put in stasis.

Yana wakes up, gasping and coughing intensely as she tries to clear seawater and grit out from her throat, clenching the gravel of the beach in her hands as her couching eventually turns into heavy breathing. She looks around her. A forest of pines lie ahead, the skies clear in mid-morning. She shivers at the small gust of wind that blows her face and soaked clothes.

A small group of seabirds soar overhead.

« Yana has discovered the Toulka »

Wait, the crew! She turns around to see the boat washed ashore, a total wreck. And... the bodies.. maybe some are still alive. She goes from person to person, placing her hand in front of each one's mouth. Dead. The Galleyman? Dead. The helmsman? Nowhere to be seen. The captain? They said he jumped ship during the storm. Dead. Gone. Dead. Missing...  She comes to a particular man and holds her hand over his face... a knot forms in her stomach... Alive.

With urgency she takes hat she can carry from the ship—the galleyman's knife—perfect. She takes the knife and cuts some of the cloth from the sail and some rope, and looks back at the man still breathing on the shore with a sneer and quickly make her way into the forest. turning to head inland. At first, there seems to be no wild animals, no savage tribesmen hiding in the shadows. Nevertheless, she is hungry and finds a cluster of bushes with red berries on them.

« Yana has discovered the Mokachi Bush »

Curious, she feels them in her hand and mashes the soft berry between her fingers to see if it would irritate her. Overcome with the urge of hunger, however, she couldn't wait any longer, and frantically began picking them and popping them into their mouth, eating them rapidly. There were seeds in the berries, but it didn't matter; she swallowed them as well. After a few minutes, the berries didn't cause any allergic reaction. She seemed fine, and looked over the bush to make sure she would remember it for later, and continued her walk inland turning North.

An argument over property. That was the last thing Theric remembered before a crash sent him off his feet and plunged into a deep dark sleep. He can't even remember how longs he's been sleeping- but he's woken by a pinch on his nose rushing blood to his brain and water crashing in over his feet. His eyes flick open, and focus on the crab that sits there staring back with its grip on the tip of his nose.

Clambering up to his feet, without thinking Theric slams a fist down onto the crab. The crushed crab lets go, even if only due to the sudden mushing of its muscle before he grabs it and tosses it aside- seagulls no doubt making short work of it. Hunger isn't the first think that Theric feels. Its /thirst/. A dry throat, dry enough that coughs feel like they scrape him on their way out.

His eyes wander around the wreck he finds himself in. His expression of confusion turns to absent acceptance of the fate of the crew. He even recognizes the gray corpse of the man he was arguing with before. He moves over and leans down, running through his pockets for anything of use.

Afterwards, he got up. He looked around and began to investigate the rest of the bodies- one by one. After it dawned on him something was missing, he bares his teeth angrily and turns to the treeline. "You've got to be--" He snarls, glaring back and forth before he begins to stomp inland- heading north-west words-- mostly heading west, even. Find water to drink first, stomp around later.

The gulls overhead cry and begin to circle as they see a new treat awaiting them.

He finds in his pockets a small spool of twine and a blade for trimming his beard. He also finds a piece of hardened bread—looks like it'll still stay fresh for a while.

As Theric stomps his way up the rocky beach, a few more of the crabs scuttle out of his way as the shadow ahead of them or perhaps the impact of his footsteps scare them off.

He reaches the shoreline and finds a lot–really quite a lot of beached driftwood. He's not sure if he can construct a boat from it, but making a shelter out of these should be easy with the right tools. Upon further inspection, this wood lines the shoreline to the South to the rocky cape and around to the mainland—Wait, how large is this place?...

The thought crosses his mind as his eyes travel across the landscape. Chapped lips purse, and he lets out a sigh through flared nostrils. He looks over towards all the driftwood and begins to gather some armfuls before he heads back in the direction of his wreckage. Mostly larger pieces that he'll be able to prop up into some basic form of a shelter. Water can wait a little bit.

He drops them off at a nice spot which he assumes will be spared from the tide coming in over top of him. He looks over the wreck once more, before he's moving the corpses around into semi respectful positions. Except the guy he was arguing with- he can stay how he is. Afterwards, he goes to work wading around to try and go through as much of the cargo as he can get his hands on. For now, he just splays it out.

His eyes flick to the sky- trying to find any sign of smoke. Any hint of civilization he can, really. He sniffles, and then goes back to trying to find some fresh water to drink.

It doesn't take long for Theric to drag over several significantly-sized logs, and there are plenty more.

Theric gathers some of the cargo. Seems most of it was taken away by the tides. Nevertheless he finds a small barrel made by a skilled cooper. It's almost too heavy for him to move, but he is able to drag it ashore. He finds a crate with soaked bolts of fabric—Nothing fancy, just plain tan fabric. Beyond that, he finds an ornate chest with an ornate leather-bound book written in one of the Romano languages. A † shape is pressed into its cover.

He also finds a lot of rope, as much as you would expect on a ship, but upon further inspection, a section of rope had recently been cut. He inspects what remains of the deck and finds that some sailcloth had also been cut away. As he ponders and gazes into the sky, he thinks he can make out a thin and loose whisp of smoke to the NNE. Giant birds approaching grab his attention, however. They seem to be eyeing the bodies.

« Theric has discovered the Ochnaba »

After looking for more but finding none, he disembarks and begins to walk back to shore, but while wading, he stumbles on something buried in the rocky sand, loses his balance and falls face first into the shallow water, completely drenching his clothes. His feet don't hurt from whatever he struck, but it felt like a rod or bar.

Yana finds herself satisfied for now as she moves deeper into the forest to the Northwest. She stops, however, when she finds scratches and deep gashes carved into the lower part of tree trunks. What could have done this? Is it a human or an animal? Cautiously, she continues northward. Looking up, she takes note of the angle of the sun, and coincidentally notices three, four...
wait, several
little gray doves nesing in the trees eyeing her from their perch.

« Yana has discovered the Vimadi »

As she continues, she comes across a doe and her fauns, which, when alerted to her presence, begin to run to escape. She drops her sailcloth and rope and takes off in pursuit, but with the deer being faster, she just ends up exhausted and walks defeated back to where she dropped her stuff.

Culture of Origin:  Celtic
Language(s):  Proto-Celtic, Proto-Germanic
love:  Male
Age:  29
Physical Description:  5'10, of medium build.  Reddish brown curly hair, thick beard; both cut short.  Scarred hands and arms.
Trade:  Fisherman

Theric grunts as he pulls the barrel along with great effort, dragging it through the sand before setting it onto the shore. The crates proved to be easier, but the thing he caught eye of was the chest. He remembered seeing this same chest while he was... 'Exploring' the ship.

He sets it onto the shore before he cracks it open and observes the book inside. He gives a gentle run through its pages to see if he can make any sense of the words on its pages. The romano lettering hurts his eyes a little after a few minutes of looking through it, and he opts to set it back in the chest for now.

Theric gathers up the rope, looking over at the clearly cut section. His face goes red with anger as his suspicions were confirmed from when he checked over the bodies. He angrily gathers the rest of the ropes and clothes he can.

Theric looks over to the giant birds, squinting at them before he goes back to try and gather the last bit of things from the wreckage. They can have them- for all he cares.

Theric tumbles over and falls into the water- the water splashing over and around him as hef alls into the water before he pushes himself back up to his feet. There's an angry snarl, and he's picking himself up to reach for the thing he tripped on. Now the smartest idea- but he intends to try and yank it out regardless.

Afterwards, he begins trying to make some slings and bags from the sailcloths and ropes he's gathered- as well as a very basic waterskin.

Aif

Accepted. Please indicate whether you would like to wait to be shipwrecked with a player to come or if you would like to start right away.

The barrel seems packed with a solid mass, and the shifting of it indicates that its contents are dry and granular.

Theric gathers 5 tunics in good shape, two sets of a leather breastplate, one light and one heavy, a pair of bronze greaves, and 5 leather shoes. Than man you were arguing with also happened to have a small cloth bag of gold, silver and bronze Romano coins, which based on the climate of your surroundings and your previous expeditions through Romanicia, you deduce that any vendor here may not accept them at the same rate.

Theric yanks the rod-like object forcefully, and it doesn't give at first, with some of the gravelly sand giving way. He pulls it out gentler and reveals an iron spear from the western territories of Romanicia

Theric is able to make some slings by tying sailcloth to planks washed ashore from crates or parts of the ship, but is unable to sew bags together without the proper tools. Making a waterskin would be hopeless without proper material.

Yana arrives at a forest clearing and stops in her tracks. here am I even going?! I'm just wandering around at this point. There could be wild animals or worse—barbarians ahead. I needs to get away from him, as far as I can. She has a look at her surroundings and sighs, drawing a cross over her chest and kneeling. "Да! и в долината на мрачната сянка ако ходя Няма да се уплаша от зло; Защото Ти си с мене; Твоят жезъл и Твоята тояга, те ме утешават."

She gets up and begins to mark mentally where in her surroundings any kind of shelter would work. After a little more than a few minutes, she concludes that a hammock would be safest from the unknown wildlife below. She girds her loins, and grabs the rope at its middle, wrapping it halfway around a sturdy tree's trunk, wraps the remaining rope around her hands and takes a firm hold, alternating between shifting the rope up and shifting her body slowly up the tree's trunk before she arrives at a high enough and strong enough limb on which to tether her hammock, and she begins her work, being sure to leave enough rope to climb back down if need be.
