In part of the same news cycle, AI executives are all also saying they should probably slow down development, but if they aren't the first to create a humanity-ending AI system then some other company might do so instead and they would be less ethical about it so really they dont have a choice but to keep developing but maybe add some safeguards I guess?
Which can alternatively be read as, hey our IPO cycles are coming up and with everyone realizing AI is loving useless at actually replacing workers and only costs companies more money, we will instead drum up how potentially powerful it is so that you give us more money to help fund the (by some estimates)anywhere from 500 billion to 1.2 trillion dollars of debt accumulated over the last few years of development. An amount that will assuredly crash the world economy once the speculation tapers off and people realize they will not be getting their money back.
This could actually all go in the international news thread but since a lot of these companies are primarily set up in the US and have ties to US politicians eh.
Anyways, given how much they have shown they dont give a forget about us humans, with statements like we need to ration our drinking water so that they have enough water to cool their datacenters, the idea that they are suddenly pro-regulation cannot be mistaken as a sudden moral awakening. They merely realize that the upcoming decentrilized movements like LocalAI will prove to provide the functions that AI companies are touting at a fraction of the cost and environmental impact, and a market upset at this point before they've had a chance to pump and dump their own stocks means they would suffer with the rest of us plebians when the economy collapses.
