Author Topic: Game Rants (How to Make a Good Game)  (Read 5574 times)

Probably not, but it shouldn't discourage people from being able to intelligently discuss issues in games. Even if nothing comes of it, it's still a contribution. Maybe some independent developer (and it would need to be an independent developer- they've got nothing to lose deviating from the default formula for creating blockbuster games) would use the contents of such a rant to write a game that grows in popularity so much that major game developers begin to consider it. (and hey, take a look at the roots of Portal and Counter-Strike! Some game about cartoon characters popping in and out of colored holes to solve puzzles and mazes, and a mod for a quake based game that attempted to emulate the feel of classic shooters- having more in common with Space Invaders than Red Orchestra with it's stamina meters and fancy 'oh look at me i don't have a crosshair' gameplay- and tie in themed team based deathmatch in a balanced way that was meaningful, intuitive and fun for the player without being overly complicated)

In any case, I think you only stated reasons why you disagreed, no actual reasons for why his rant was bad (something along the lines of spelling, grammar and inconsistent logic may have been more appropriate), and, whether you intended it or not, made a brilliant post contributing to the discussion of why you like games. (in practice, you posted the same thing the author did, from a different point of view)

Oh wow, are you THAT handicapped?!  More people make games than you know, and guess what?  PEOPLE VOICE OPINIONS ON WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE!  First off, you cannot say an opinion sucks, also, do you really think I do not know that game companies do not read this?  I'm an intelligent person.  You could just say "I don't agree with this statement."  Also, for text mute, from the game, players are speaking in text, therefore mute works there, do you whine about the word in mute mods for Blockland?  NO!  Also, chat disappears from the non-menu chat if spammed, handicap.  I very well know about the Samus boobs thing, but that's just to make her more appealing for smash bros, no other females are like, ever shown.  Diversity means a mix of races, and that stuff, Only a select few games have female main characters.  Even fewer have black main characters, also, do you see a male main character with not much muscles in every game?  I didn't think so.  For the puzzle games comment, I was just saying an example, 3rd grader, note the "and such" part.  I think releasing yet another game where you shoot the hell out of another person, nothing else is starting to be a bore, and a risk.  Taking a risk is VERY good, also, you have access to the other players for ideas.  Ok, do you get it now?  Err, sorry I got so mad, it just pissed me.

Not really.
His guide (so to say) on how to make a good game isn't really valid, he stated something that doesn't apply to video games or their developers, not even small independent ones.
All of it was quite useless and was more of a common sense issue. If you aren't smart enough to include the feature of muting someone then quite frankly you shouldn't be making video games.

Did I hit a nerve?
You can never make a successful game by following your guide, because according to you it just an opinion. Yes, I have seen an endless amount of games where the main character isn't some bulky white male, stop making generalizations based off of one or two games that recently came out.
No, taking risks when trying to make a profit and a living are the worst and dumbest things you could ever do. Especially if you're an independent game developer and just blew over five thousand dollars following some idiots guide that doesn't even make sense.
Giving a female big boobs to make her appealing to some horny 5 year old child is exactly the opposite of diversity. "We are going to give her big boobs so males buy this game" is the same as "We are going to make the main character white because the % of white people who own video game consoles or a good computer > % of black people who own video game consoles or a good computer".

Wow, yet you agree with Yahtsee?  EDIT: I'm not saying that I LOVE to see huge boobs in games!  You are loving handicapped.

No, I find the avatar rather amusing.
There you go again with your assumptions and generalizations.

It's just I think someone's avatar says something about them, like those HELLO, my name is... cards amuse me.  Read my edit there too.

Ok, this has been bugging me for a while.

Characters

Seriously, people, do we need huge boobs on any and every female character in games?  They're loving polygons!  I like Valve and Nintendo, because they LIKE diversity in characters!  They have a mix of race, gender, etc.  What is wrong with a normal looking female?  Nothing!

Genre

Ok, we already have 5,000 generic shooters, how is yours different?  Grand Theft Auto has the crime factor, Portal has the portals, Half-Life series has a good plot.  Yes good plots are nice too.  Or, you can choose one of the genres that you see NO games of, like, puzzle, and such.

Online Junk

One thing that bugs me: voice chat.  Yes, it does annoy me, give a way to turn it off, or mute, PLEASE!   It's good for strategizing, or machinima, not Rick Roll, or ear rape.  Have a text chat mute and such too.  Add something unique, like the rival system in Burnout, or a free roam pre-match setup time.  Have many game modes.  Make good dedicated management.

Graphics < Gameplay

Make us be able to change quality, for better performance, for old computers.  Just make the game look good enough to know what everything is, feel free to polish a lot, but look at Crysis, many people do not suggest it, it's gameplay wasn't good enough. (from what I've heard.)  After graphics are good, then you test to see if quality broke gameplay then release, not make good looking stuff, then gameplay.  make the gameplay unique, as stated in the "genre" section.  Also, release when YOU want, not when fans do, look at Badspot, he doesn't give a stuff about us wanting v9 so bad.

That is all, so discuse.  No console wars stuff.
I have never seen a African-American or Hispanic person in a nintendo game.

I didn't mean Nintendo has diversity, sorry for the confusion.

I never said you did, you dyslexic forget.

Why isn't there a curse filter anymore?

Why isn't there a curse filter anymore?
Yeah, I wish it was still there. D:  Hey, I have an idea, this is going nowhere, lets just stop.

I was thinking of a summer project (Fps) that would have a REALLY good plot, involving real things such as the Kashmir conflict and the Strait of Hormuz, and have something like how the Kashmir conflict evolved into Nuclear warfare, shutting down China along with taking a toll on the global economy.

I think it sounds good, but I find it to be so realistic that some would think it is a "Hate game."

I also lol'd at how someone made a game called "Ethnic Cleansing" on the Genesis3D engine.

Ok, this has been bugging me for a while.

I have. What I haven't seen, however, is an African-American or Hispanic professional wrestler.  :cookieMonster:

I really do prefer my games to have an edge on graphics. Like the up-coming game Grid. The reason it brings me in is the graphics, but it is a fun game to play. It's not like I'd ever say something sucks because of the graphics, but I can admit that graphics do mean a lot to me. Games like Crysis are always really cool to me because they show me just how good graphics can get at the current time. That being said, I think a lot more developers need to go for an original, stylized look instead of a hyper-realistic one.

I loved when I was involved in a 5 vehicle crash and my windshield cracked, with the camera shaking and providing good motion blur. (Dashboard view ftw.)
