There is a black sand source.
And zackin get rid of that screenshot, it's stretching the page.

I already called after dUMBELLS ):

1: I would like to join in this
2: How do you check the date in DF

I'll add you to the list, and for that other question I really don't know, a day is when the Dwarves wake up to when they go back to sleep, update coming so check this thead in a few minutes.

Actually they first fell asleep for me after like a month and a half.

Go into the fort status screen (z) to see the date?

I don't care what that says, the 'average dwarvern day' is what I'm going off of.
Screenshots being uploaded.

The Third Day
The bloodthirsty alligator has returned for sweet revenge! No, just kidding, he just keeps wondering around at unrealistic speed and it scares the crap out of me, getting closer and closing to our 'fortress'. I can't really call it a fortress, more like groups of stockpiles with underground lodging and an artifical lake. That reminds me too, I should start digging into a hillside or something. Anyway, as the dwarves awoke I gave them the task of putting together the well I reserved and that didn't take long at all, so we started the construction on the trade depot but that didn't get done because my mason felt too lazy. The off duty peasant and other dwarves with no jobs yet started on engraving the tombs walls:

Heres a quick screenshot of our irrigation system, please note that the wall grate wasn't constructed at the time of the screenshot but I added one soon after. You can also grow outdoor plants near the floodgate but I had to get rid of them to make room for the wall grate.

The next event in the day was me getting SO CLOSE to capturing a mountain goat in a cage trap, but of course they wandered right past it. However, I heard a tale of a deadly mountain goat offspring let loose through a fortress, killing many occupants. So I am not too sure catching some of these is a great idea.

Some time later the engraving is complete, seeing the unoccupied dogs I have decided to train them as war dogs soon. On a completely unrelated note, I should get my metalsmith to work soon.

Then they slept, end of day stockpiles (Yes they have changed, I let my miner mine through a whole hilllside of microcline)

Also: The Giant Eagle returned, I really want to capture the thing.
EDIT:
Alenth Eneil proudly corrected the 'm' things near that cage to be the harmless bastardus, aka the hoary marmot. There are still mountain goats in the area however. The marmots didn't get caught so I'm right there.

At least hoary marmots won't maul your dwarves.

Even a kitten seems able to kill one. (I have seen some BRUTAL kittens.)

Again, I do not see the lake from the above-ground shots of the stockpiles.  Where are they in relation?

Above ground and below ground comparison for Anti:

whats with all the loving tombs

One tomb in the middle of the lake *

then theres this big loving place with a stuffLOAD OF STAIRS
WHAT THE forget.

I vote on channeling the grand total of FOUR TILES holding the roof up over there.

and so I might. That's the trade depot.

Hoary marmots are delicious animals that don't really fight back.
If there's magma as well as sand, you can make a giant castle out of nothing but glass, and you can make farm plots on the glass as well.
