Vegetarians vs. Meat Eaters:
.) It takes 78 calories of fossil fuel to produce 1 calorie of beef protein; 35 calories for 1 calorie of pork; 22 calories for 1 of poultry; but just 1 calorie of fossil fuel for 1 calorie of soybeans.
.) It takes 3 to 15 times as much water to produce animal protein as it does plant protein.
.) It takes up to 16 pounds of soybeans and grains to produce 1 lb. of beef and 3 to 6 lbs. to produce 1 lb of turkey & egg.
.) 20 vegetarians can live in the space it takes for one meat eater to live.
.) Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation
.) The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming)
.) In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies - the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000
.) Meat-eating has been linked with cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, kidney stones, and many other devastating diseases. By eliminating meat from your diet you can take a crucial step towards a long life of health and happiness.
.) Meat contains approximately 14 times more pesticides than plant foods. Dairy products contain over five times the amount.
.) We are eating way too much protein. In fact it is almost impossible to get too little protein. If you just lived on potatoes each day you'd have enough. We only need between 44 to 55 grams a day. Some of us are consuming three times that amount. Excess protein has been linked to Alzheimer's disease. Vegetables will easily supply your daily needs without the risks.
.) An acre of farmland devoted to soybeans will provide roughly 30 times more protein than an acre devoted to cattle grazing.
.) The average American eats 400% of the RDA for protein. This causes excess nitrogen in the blood that creates a host of long-term health problems.
