except it clones the mirrored object instead of actually mirroring your edits

not what I need

As far as I know it automatically mirrors your edits but okay

as far as i know you could just split the model in half and use the mirror modifier to duplicate the other side with merging

I think this is it

Are there any videos of this?

You literally just model half, apply to modifier and apply it

yeah a few loop cut slides through the middle and deleting the other half usually does the trick assuming the model is simple. make sure you do the daily "apply location, rotation, scale" using CTRL+A in object mode to make sure your mirror isn't off center

this one resembles a AK-47.
also, the grip could be different.
that kind of grip is like in every gun.
and the empty bullet exit is in the wrong side,
you really want bullets going into your face?

its actually a vz.58 and you can tell bc of that weird ejection port, >look< both sides and the top are exposed upon cycling

If using using the mirror modifier clones your mesh instead of mirroring it, it means the mesh is too far from the mirror axis.

The axis of each object is defined by the object centre. In the older Blender it was represented by large pink dot, it is probably orange in the new one.

Here's how to fix it:
1. Cut your mesh in half
2. Delete one half
3. Turn on the mirror modifier
4. Move your mesh closer to the axis

If your object ends up being off-centre, move it back in object mode to the 0 0 0 position.
