Yes, the twisted proportions were intentional, of course.
As for the face, I did experience some trouble translating it to the side; next time I will try and be more precise. If you ever happen to model a character off another reference of mine, I advise you to use the frontal view of the face as your primary reference. :P
Since I'm here, I might as well dig something up from my models folder:

How do you apply textures in Blender? For example, if you make a sofa and want to apply a texture so it looks like fabric to it, how do you do it?
If you aren't using the newest version of blender:
Edit mode > Shading (F5) > Texture Buttons (F6)
In the textures panel, click the arrow next to TE:TEX and click ADD NEW.
In "Texture Type" click "Image".
In the "Image" panel, load your desired image.
Go back to "Material Buttons" and in the textures panel, choose your texture.
Play around with some of the variables to get your texture aligned the way you like.
