i had to kill a super mutant behemeth with a hunting rifle and a 10mm pistol ghouls are not scary at all I lol when i see them

You get the key to your house in Tenpenny Towers if you kill Tenpenny, even if you have the megaton house.

You can't go in the front door though, you have to go out on Tenpenny's balcony and enter through the backdoor.

Yeah, just do all of the quests you can, it'll take up a huge chunk of time and keep you loving the game.  Oh, and it is possible to skip most of the main quest :o
