I'd love it if he could make a lantern you could carry. You'd probably make it out of a torch or two and a few minerals/rock. It'd be like a tool but whenever you have it in one of your inventory slots (like when you place blocks) it's equipped. It'd run out over time of course.

I was just about to say that. Having to adjust the light on every block you passed would slow it down a lot.

I don't like bushido's ghost idea, Minecraft can be startling enough without ghosts coming out of a wall while you're mining.
