Generally the endermen are supposed shadow lurkers from the far lands. The player is not capable of sustaining any form of existence in the far lands for a long period of time, this is known from attempts by players to exit the known land into what actually seems to be infinity.What if we were capable of somehow entering this realm without the consequence of crashing or other misfortunes. Imagine straying into the dark recesses of the cleft in the wall, a vertical ravine which stretches into dark oblivion. The music is deformed and things lurk in the shadows.I'd imagine we can use the similar method of gaining access into the nether by resources such as obsidian. What if Notch were to replace the diamonds with a rare ornament which is collected in the inventory from the endermen to make perhaps a dark stone of sorts.You then contrive a portal for which you must fall into because it lies flat horizontally like a shadow. When you fall into it you enter into a realm without stars, the moon is gone, and the landscape is riven with flanged mountains accompanied by dark spires, monolithic structures, and dark shores without water.

I'm not sure if my post had any effect on him by they are relatively close. Plus this post is before 1.9 so I certainly hope so.
