not sure about the longer piston

or you could just not be lazy and make a vanilla piston elevator and transmit redstone current up with alternating blocks and torches.

I don't know what a vanilla piston elevator is and I dont know how to transmit redstone current up with alternating blocks and torches. I just got minecraft on Christmas...

vanilla basically means no mods and there are tutorials for these kinds of things.

as for the sending current up, that is how you do it, with alternating blocks and torches.

What block do I use for the block spaces? Wood? And where do I put pistons?

you can use any block except for glass, the pistons would go next to all of the rows

where are you going to get wood/food?

unless you live off of rotten flesh and abandoned mineshafts....
