I don't think there's really anything you can do about it, Notch will probably make it so instead of it placing a flat pixel it will make a 1x1 cube so the hat will have more dimension.

Hopefully notch makes the characters made of voxels, that would be nifty.  If you could cut parts out, that would be really sweet.

I think it'd be cool if eventually you could draw on your character directly from the preferences screen.
