Look in caves exposed to land, look along the beach, or look where a mountain and the plains meet. There is usually tons hiding in places like those.

I think my problem is I don't like to venture far from my main area for fear of getting lost/not being able to get back before dark and dying

I've had maps that don't require me to travel far and have dungeons.
Just bring some materials to make a temp base if you happen to get stuck out in the dark. I always do that.

Practice making mini-huts as fast as you can. That way, when its night, you can build one quick.

I got lost and died

I got lost going one direction past behind my house cause there was a lot of water falls and floating hills and stuff that way, eventually turned around backtracked and backtracked again till I got on the correct mountain ridge to see my watch tower


oh and snow levels will give way to green mountains if you go one direction long enough
