what should I do with the 5 diamonds I just found? I'm thinking a pickaxe but I'm fine with stone/iron tools at the moment, so.

Tools  are the only uses for diamond and pickaxe is the most useful tool so you might aswell, it's not like you're going to make a necklace out of them.
