Posting is actually what forums are designed for, it's okay if people post. Even if it's been posted before it's fine.

Edit: I'm having trouble coming up with a chart for how much ores are worth like a X Coal = Y Iron sort of thing. It would start out with how many coal an iron is, and then all the other others after that would be based on iron. Could someone help with that? I'm going to use it for a trading post on the server i play on with my irl friends.

I had a plan at one point to take my spare Core 2 Duo and RAM, and just buy a microATX case + low-power GPU to make a dedicated server for Minecraft.

Unfortunately my budget is directed towards either a new laptop or just surviving in general.

Just keep trying, it'll eventually get past the error screen.

I want to host a multiplayer server. I try clicking the minecraft.exe thing or wahtever it is, but a message saying that i need to pick something to open it. What thing shall i pick?

The problem is that it shouldn't be asking you how to open an .exe file.

P.S.
I don't know if you server hosters know this or not, but hosting a Minecraft server actually requires resources.

You really can't host a server and play at the same time on a dual core, even at 3 GHz.
And no, you can't host on DSL speeds either.

You need at least a quad core processor, at least 2.5 GHz maybe, and at least 4GB of RAM, and at least a decent broadband connection if you live in a rural area, or fiber optics in a populated area.

I'm not saying "NO HOSTING PLEASES", I'm just saying, if you don't fulfill those requirements you'll find out shortly that the server will either lag from the start if you have shoddy internet, or will lag with more players/chunks generated eventually.

I sometimes host a Minecraft server (not as much as I used to), and my RAM usage goes as high as 3.5GB out of 4GB.  1.5 GB is normally used by Steam/Chrome/Windows/Skype/etc.  Do the math, Java eats up lots of RAM.

I'm hoping you server hosts actually have decent computers.  I'm not looking at people like Valen/Viodestructo host whatever, I'm talking about pretty much 90% of you.  I'm just worried that you're all so eager to host a server but then get super upset when you can't figure out why your dual core processor at 2 GHz and 4GB RAM (while running at least fifty other things) can't handle 10 people including yourself in your own server, or why everyone is lagging but you because your internet is the speed of a limping dog.
