I've joined a couple but there are always like 200 million towns everywhere with 1000 chunks of wilderness between them and the people never really roleplay.

All of the ones I join have gigantic monoliths at the centre of the town with a few cottages around, and then it takes 30 minutes to walk to the next town, where very well prepared people will randomly kill you.
