It seems like a majority of ravines cut into Abandoned Mines. Most of the ones I've found in survival lead to an Abandoned Mine.

Abandoned mines aren't created all at once, they generate themselves as you explore them.

Flattened that bitch with MCEdit and put in stone brick walls on the exposed hill surfaces.  It's right on sea level too (so lets hope it doesn't flood).

stone bricks take to long to break with an iron pick.
I need to dismantle about half of this wall and rebuild it for the 3rd time.
I keep thinking of better ways to make it.

I found a ravine in a swamp by falling into it. Took me half a loving day to get out.
