They don't. They walk around in day light. In fact, I tried to leave my house in SMP during day and all I saw was a spam of Nether particles as it flashed around trying to flank me and do 5 heart damage. :(

That's odd because that is exactely what I saw atop a mountain without any trees or caves on it.
No dark areas.
And no it wasn't morning or evening.

They probably spawned up there at night and never despawned, weird. Speaking of which, has persistant mobs been added?
