You need to buy Minecraft to play legally.
Once you buy it you can play the newest update that isn't a prerelease automatically.
You have to manually upgrade for prereleases though.

I'm perfectly aware. I was asking for information on the size of biomes with the new update; I don't know about it because I don't have Minecraft.
