With the addition of ai they are not scripted to climb vines or ladders, so they shouldn't. This was possible before because of the dumb "coming straight at ya' bro" nature of the mobs and causing them to walk into a wall with ladders. Never saw it happen tho.

Had mobs climb up stuff after me previously, but yeah no longer seen it now.

Guess vines do ok then, but the circular wood staircase isn't a problem either.

You can download minecraft for free legally, but you only download the launcher, not the actual game.
