What if the void is actually space? It would only make sense. The reason the void is above the nether is because you're on a barren underground planet.

What if the main land is an artificial "ring" around the nether?

Considering a portal is required to enter the Nether and it's been referred to as another dimension, I don't think it and the overworld are anywhere near each other

That makes some sense because if you move a long distance in the over world, make a new portal, then go in it, you'd find the other portal nearby.
