If you pressed F3, you'd realize those are Ocean chunks. AKA the game is having problems using the correct World Type when loading some chunks. Should be fixable, I'm sure.

I found a desert temple from a forest next to my spawn. The world generation is extremely ugly in 1.3 apparently.
