i wasn't clear, when i said default, i didn't mean like an improvement ON default, i meant like normal stuff, as opposed to some goddamned pokemon pack

Personally i <3 the "Isabella" texture pack.
However i think it might sort of depend on Optifine or MCPatcher to work properly.
Not sure, i use it now (without Optifine) and it works properly as far as i can see..

If Optifine/MCPatcher gets updated to 1.3.1 you can have randomized mob skins (same style though, don't worry. :P), custom animated water and lava and more, i think.
