There are no must-have mods. Everyone likes different minecraft mods.
I enjoy Universal Electricity, ICBM, Hawk's Machinery, Newt's Horticulture and a few other UE-mods.
I also enjoy TerraFirmaCraft.

Timber mod - requires mod loader but makes cutting down trees so much faster

Optifine - speeds minecraft up big time has options for antialias and so much more! and allows for 32x texture packs!
