The livestream works like a video, so you can backtrack into it even as it records more. Check 5:08:36 for when they start a slideshow about the "Future of Minecraft," which lists some noticeable changes to base mechanics and such.

  • Minecraft 1.5 will be called the "Redstone Update."
  • It as planned for before Christmas, but they don't think they can get it out by then now.
  • FallingSand duplicators work because of how the game has different sources for updating redstone.
  • They are going to fix this by redoing that system, which will make it more consistent and predictable. It will also fix the orientation-specific bugs.
  • Timing for redstone devices will change.
  • Block Update Detectors will be affected, although not fully removed "(yet)" since they are built on glitchy behavior.
  • The strength of your redstone signal will now matter, allowing them to add a "Capacitor Block."
  • Capacitor Blocks will work like repeaters, with one input and one output, but will only output a full redstone signal if the input redstone signal is strong enough.
  • The threshold for how much signal is required to create a full output will be configurable.
  • This will allow them to add Weighted Pressure Plates, which "output signal strength depending on pressure."
  • This can also be used with Detector Rails and Chest Carts, so the Chest Cart will only be sent when it is filled to a certain amount/empty.
  • They want to improve Minecarts, in that giving them more uses.
  • They looked at mods that add transportation pipes and decided that Minecarts in Vanilla could be repurposed to work similarly, although they are going to do testing to see all they can do.
  • This means much more use for Chest Carts - There will be ways of loading and unloading them. There will be railtrack to unload "freeriders," being entities like pigs that have entered your Minecart.
  • They are considering the ability to link Minecarts together, which would give furnace carts a purpose again since they can be directly linked to what they are moving.
  • Other additions: "Etcetera" - A daylight detector, Fireworks for New Years.
  • They don't plan for any new mobs to be added in this update, although they usually don't plan for the mobs they add so they still might if anything comes to mind.

Q&A Portion (Not completely covered here. See for yourself.):
  • They are considering adding a new ore, which would appear in the Nether and be used to craft Capacitors.
  • For The End, they thought about making it so once you kill the Ender Dragon, the dimension would become another dimension which looks much more "beautiful," although no solid plans on that.
  • Ridgedog was second in line for the Q&A, and he asked them if they could have HD skins, at least double the normal size. They said some players simply don't like HD, and it would be strange to have people with high resolution skins conflicting with the default resolution textures. I myself assume the other reason is downloading higher resolution textures for everyone would be a bigger burden on the skin servers, clients, etc. that they don't want to risk with everyone always complaining about lag.
  • In Jeb's redstone test world, the only things effected were time-specific devices, such as set ups of repeaters.
  • He stated Dragons are hard to code, and Ender Dragons flying through terrain was a workaround which they couldn't do for Red Dragons.
  • They'd only consider new weapons if they have a unique enough purpose. Jeb mentioned spears with longer reach, Dinnerbone mentioned crossbows that can't shoot as far. But only as on the spot ideas.
  • They can't agree on a use for redstone blocks other than storage.
  • There are no new plans for lapis.
  • Of course they don't want to redo the entire game on another engine, but one specific reason they stated they want to keep using Java is because it has a loading feature which will really help with the Mod API which they would have to remake themselves in another coding language.
  • Quests and such are still planned, but since Jon, the AI guy, has been working on other projects, they can not go ahead with such things.
  • They seem to agree about adding Netherbrick Half Slabs, and will likely add them to the game.
  • They wanted to give the player the ability to enchant paper and then use an anvil to apply the enchantment to items, although it would be extremely expensive. Still possible.
  • The Mod API entails having a new client which should perform better on old and new systems.
  • Dinnerbone originally planned to add bags to pig saddles so you could store items on your pig as you traveled, but he didn't get to do this. He still wants to. He ended up adding the carrot on a stick to control pigs.
  • The systems mentioned before with Chest Carts can work with items on the ground, in a chest, or in a chest cart. The system is an "allocator," although they don't want to call it that.
  • Jeb says there will never be vertical half slabs.
  • Jeb says it is possible waypoints for the map will be added. It was mentioned how there are extra unused map icons which may be purposed for waypoints.
  • They plan to work with biomes, changing existing ones and adding new ones, although nothing specific is sure yet.
  • They currently don't know how to reincorporate intentional Block Update Detectors once they are fixed by the other fixes being made, but they would like to give the player a way of doing this somehow.
  • They want to make combat more interesting than clicking, and they know some mods do combat well, but they want whatever they do to still feel vanilla.
  • Changes to Snow Biomes may come in an update sometime next year.
  • Jeb explained where the Wither Skeletons came from: Jeb was helping on a noob server from scratch, and eventually they were all geared up. He then decided they needed something very costly that would be another goal for players. So he conceived beacons which require all those resources to create. From there, they decided the best way to obtain such things would be from a mob, so they made the Wither Boss. And from that, they added Wither Skeletons so you could reach the Wither Boss.
  • They are in the planning stages for a friend system for all Mojang accounts (not just Minecraft) which they hope to release next year. It will involve changes on their servers, as is obvious but to say that they really intend to make something functional.
  • They may consider adding a device which can tell the player how deep they are. This is mainly considered due to other platforms without access to a debug menu, as well as for those who do not wish to 'cheat' with the debug menu.
  • They can not add the ability to mix different kinds of half slabs into a single block area because they can't fit that data into 4 bytes, especially if they add more types of slabs. However, considering other changes being made, Jeb believes that it may be possible as a side effect of other changes.
  • The daylight detector will also work with the new signal strength mechanic, so signal strength from the detector will be proportional to the amount of sunlight.
  • Revisiting the lighting bugs is still planned, as long as it isn't too intensive as the fixes were when originally made in the snapshots.

they're playing approaching nirvana in the background

figures

Reading that list made me really excited.

Reading that list made me really excited.
Indeed it does sound exciting.
Even for a redstone noob like me. :)

Lately i have been mechanizing the little village of me and my little brother and sister.
Simple constructions like an autofarm for crops, automatic cobblestone generator (that pushes the cobble down when generated so it doesn't get into the lava) are the best i can do at the moment. ;P
Though they like to see such things and these redstone changes really sound interesting to mechanize a default minecraft server more (without being too overly complicated).

We have looked into mod packs like technic and the such, but they are just too complex i am afraid.
I am still looking for a mod that brings some cool default like things to the game.
Mostly some horse mod so we can tame and ride horses.
Mo' creatures looks nice and all, but all the more recently added styles of horses really differ too much from the default minecraft style i think. :C
So do all the other recently added creatures in that mod.
The first creatures were really cool (ogres excluded), they felt quite good in the default Minecraft style.

Ah well.
Really exciting news.

I as well need to acquire a fresh pair of pants

Any reason Multiplayer isn't working?

Any reason Multiplayer isn't working?
it's usually the fault of the server owner, or if the minecraft login servers are down.

The promised updates are really interesting, we can use them to make decent factories. hopefully they don't turn out to be lanterns.
