THREAD DERAIL COMPLETE or not
« Last Edit: June 09, 2009, 12:46:57 PM by Duckmeister »

I'm guilty of bashing relatively new people, though I also encouraged a few a new people after some idiots decided to run around, yelling "fail!!!!!!" in the Gallery section.

D: I flame alot why am I not up there.

Because putting you up there will only encourage you to do it more.

Who are you to say what we should do. Bling pretty much hit it on the dot. I have noticed the small change in the forums too. Hell, a quick look at Clan Discussion could help you see what we are talking about. It is a freaking mess there.

I'm just saying that the forums are fine as they are. Clans should be banned really.

Sorry, but everything you have said so far in this thread is idiotic and not-helpful, let alone contradictory.

There.  I tried to say it nice.

all i have to say is this. in the rules to Runescape. BE NICE. the person on the other side of the computer IS a human. they have FEELINGS. but this isnt Runescape now is it

Uh, what now?

This is my opinion of these forums:
The flaming and bullying seems worse back then than it is now.
Take these topics for example: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=26606.0
and some stuff in this topic: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=29102.0
more sampapa stuff: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=26588.0
Now when people that get flamed are just ignorant people or annoiying trolls.

I hope this forum will be ignored. The forums are fine as they are, if you act 'oh so special' and let all the stuff get to you theres only one thing I can say.
Get out.
I hope you're joking. Have you seen any of this stuff that goes on? Have you looked at Spation's latest topic?

Yes, its true. The forums have been a stuffpile. It always will be. Until we actually stop bandwagoning everything and go "intrnets is srs busness", these forums are stuff. Not in the sense that the webpages are broken, but in the sense that everyone here is after each other like hyenas over a small lion cub.

Yeah I hate it when they do that.

It has come a long way, beforehand the place was filled with all kinds of trolls. Nowadays there's the occasional newbie that wants to fit in and thinks flaming others is the way to go but they're quickly made to realise that that's not a very good idea.

This is the common problem though. What if you aren't actively seeking to harm the person's feelings? What if that person mistook something you said as an insult? If it were a forums rule that you had to be absolutely "nice" to others then the forums would be in pretty bad shape. Look at the Roblox forums as a good example. This kind of guideline puts stress on the community as a whole and eventually leads to it breaking up, either the mods cease caring altogether or the community falls apart completely. It's not a rare phenomena on the net. Of course you need to flak anyone that's being explicitly mean to others for no reason other then to boast themselves, let them know that kind of stuff definitely won't fly in real life and thus shouldn't fly on the net.

Speaking of real life, the net is kind of a "baby step" to development of better opinions and communication in real life, I say baby step because written language lacks a very powerful part of human communication: Body Language. Physical presence is immensely powerful, so naturally in real life all communication affairs become very strict. People who try to tie the net to real life will find the common problem that no matter how they look at it, the two simply do not compare. Being cyber-bullied on the net hurts, sure, but compare that to real life bullying where you're confronted by a small gang of misfits ready to beat the crap out of you if you so much as sneeze, the psychological effect is a difference in magnitudes.

So sure, the Net can be treated like reality, but the net tends to be allot more lax simply because you have much more control. You can literally plug your ears and go "Lalala" on the net by not reading anything. You do that in front of real life bullies and you'll get your face smashed into a urinary. So keep in mind, the two are "Alike" but for all intents and purposes they might as well be treated as different.

I hope you're joking. Have you seen any of this stuff that goes on? Have you looked at Spation's latest topic?

This all occurred in the Drama Section, people usually vent their e-rage here so they don't accost any of the other sections. You can think of it as an attempt at keeping the stuff out of the rest of the forums. It's not pretty but it serves that purpose at least. Trust me as far as this forum goes compared to others, it's a pretty good hub, unless your standard for all around Niceness is the hello kitty online forums or the Roblox forums when the mods are sifting through every single slightly off-hand mean posts and deleting them/permabanning the user.

So you have two options, would you rather this be a nice but strictly controlled environment where you live in complete fear all the time that someone may report you and have your account deleted if you so much as have a different opinion from theirs? Or do you want a sort of completely free opinion hub where things are lax and you might have to defend your ideas from a few morons that try to get on top of everyone and control everything? Hey at least in the second option these control freaks get shot down rather quickly if they start to forget everyone's stuff. Of course the passive-agressive ones are harder to deal with but those starfishs are everywhere like it or not.

Second post, rant is too long

As for the bandwagoning, it is a problem, but that's kind of what the entire net mentality is nowadays. It takes minimal thinking and effort to say "Yeah I agree with him because he's winning", it's an easy potshot at getting on someone's good side, and usually that never occurs. It's difficult to shoot these people down but eventually it will have to start happening, by both the person putting the other guy under question and the questioned guy himself. You gotta stay the forget out of the situation if you don't have enough of a brain to formalize your own opinion, it actually impedes the purpose of drama threads.

Reminder, drama threads about a person can do two things:
1- They can help a person realize he's been loving up and it won't fly unless he changes a few behaviors on the net, it's a good thing overall. It's harsh but when it works, it works very well.
2- It can do the alternative, force someone to give up and leave.

The intent of most drama threads is to bring up the small issues someone might have. It works when you get to the bottom of things to try to get the person to realize exactly what everyone's yelling about. It doesn't work when you have these starfishs coming in and doing absolutely nothing except pouring fuel on a fire, then people with actual informed opinions need to stand the forget back. Some people come here to vent their issues with someone else, that's a good thing. Some people come here just to get on someone's popularity list, that's a bad thing and these people should be shot for not having any sort of opinion on anything, so they shouldn't have a say in the matter either.

If you have to agree with a valid point, add on to it or something, anything but just "This" or "I agree". It's a useless waste of space and no one cares (neither the poster or the person under questioning) unless you can actually build on top of it. And if you disagree, then go for it and put up all your points. if anyone flames you for disagreeing both the original poster and the disagreeing poster should give that starfish some flak.

Oh yeah, and of course there are the Thread Backfires which occur, but if you defend your point half right and no one has any beef with you to begin with it usually doesn't occur.

You know what? I'm going to say it.

BE NICE.

That's all there is to it.

I don't see how, unless you are over-confident in your own position, or something like that.
Not over-confident, I just don't take petty stuff to heart - And that's exactly what most of it is, petty.

Not trying to advertise or anything, but I think we should be more like www.acidmods.com. It's always a possitive atmosphere, even when asking the most handicapped of questions. And it helps that they don't have an off-topic section.
