ha!

I ordered ALL dwarves inside except my soldiers (1 wrestler, 7 champion wrestlers,POP:65)so they wouldn't be killed by goblin raiders and when I gave the all clear 1 minute later half the population was thirsty.

Alright, I've pretty much gotten the hang of startting out, now I just need to know:
-How to make gates
-How to make doors
-General Tips

Floodgates and doors: construct them at a masons workshop (or carpenters but it's a waste of wood), then build-door (b-d) to place them. You can't place a door on a tile with a rock on it or they suspend construction until the rock is moved. Floodgates are b-x and you need to use levers to open them.

Well a door that can only be controlled by a lever. Good for using as floodgates, controlling the movement of water, or magma if it's made from bauxite.

Everything, really. I kinda know how to start mining and building, but I don't quite understand alot of it.

Make sure you have atleast 1 soldier at all times incase of thieves.
have 1 and only 1 entrance so raiding parties aren't kicking your dwarve's asses while you ponder where they went.
DO NOT DIG INTO DAMP STONE.
make sure you have a farm at all times.
watch your cats, they are a plauge from how fast they have kittens.
remember, deconstruct your wagon for 3 wood.
DO NOT CHOOSE PLACES WITH AQUIFIERS.
If you have underground tunnels throughout your region that end in stairs don't forget to destroy the stairs to give hostiles less ways in.

i'm not that great on following others tempo, so you might end up with like 60 holes in the fortress and a new goblin base somewhere
