Author Topic: Worlds (AKA "The Planets" map)  (Read 31053 times)

The map is available for download right now. The update hasn't been reviewed yet, but is still available.

When it is approved, anyone who downloaded the first version will get a message asking them if they wish to upgrade to V2.

Alright, thanks.

Downloading so I can play tomorrow.

EDIT: Just tried it out. Amaaaaaaaaaazing!!!!! The update will have the planet atmospheres right?

EDIT AGAIN: Just got an update for the map on RTB, it has the finished stuff? Atmosphere, weather, and what-not?

At this time I have no intention of putting the atmospheres back into the map. Like I said before, they look awful.

Water, weather, and some other details will be available soon in the form of a save. All you'd have to do is load the save and it should work right away.

OK. Attached is version 1 of the environment save for the Worlds map.

To use it correctly you will need...

For now it:

  • Adds billowing dust to the desert planet
  • Adds deadly lava to the Lava world
  • Adds water to the Water world
  • Adds light snowing effect to Ice world

I have some ideas I wish to add to the save in the future, so don't worry if you think it is a little sparse right now.

Ideas/changes for V3 of the map (not talking about save):

  • Change ambient lighting to a more neutral, slightly brighter color. This should make the Ice world look more like snow and less like dirt
  • Satellite build pads (for spaceships and space stations)
  • More asteroids?

Definitely more asteroids. The one already there is a whole lot of fun, if you put another cluster elsewhere that would be awesome.

I love the asteroid.
I would love to see more of 'em.

The moon near the water world is a bit flat, will you make it a bit more boxy?
Also, a volcano like bit on the lava world would be nice.

EDIT: I checked out the save and there are some odd things i would like to point out:
First of all, water world:

You cannot see everything, but:
1. Water does not cover everything, on the picture you can see an open spot where there is no water currently.
2.Ugly water lines in water, you placed different water bricks on eachother which causes that there is a water line underwater.
Not very attracting. :C

Then in the lava world, the lava is made out of normal blocks.
While i understand that this is looking water for waterfalls and is easier to event with default events, i must say that when looking from inside the cave, the waterfall doesn't really looks nice.

However, it looks better than my version of an environment for the lava world as i just use emitters for the waterfall. :C
(I also added ambient lights to my waterbricks as it gives the really hot lava feeling. But it doesn't always show up nicely. :S)

But there are some points in which it doesn't really appeal to me. :)

There isn't much I can add to the moon due to its small size. I need to leave it reasonably flat so there is some build space left on it.

If I had a better way of showing moving lava I would certainly add a volcano. For now you have my fairly awful looking lava-falls. I was trying to avoid using too many extra add_ons for the environment save (such as the on_enter_water event or the waterfall bricks) though I may change that in the future. Technically the lava is made of water bricks (other than the falls) but I enabled collision so the damage event would work. I figured there would be no need for actually swimming in the lava. As for not being able to see through of the lava-falls, generally you can't see through lava anyway, but if it bothers you, what you could do is event it so that a button makes a block appear above part of the falls and some of the lava disappears, sort of like a hidden entrance to a secret base.

I know about the water planet issues. The one you took a screenshot of is due to a slight error in the interior, that will be fixed in V3. Some of the other graphical issues (like seeing extra layers of water under the top one) are simply due to rendering errors. There is little I can do to fix that other than deleting a whole bunch of detail around the edges of the interior which I'd rather avoid doing.

I'm working on a way right now to enable RTB preferences for the map, so then the server host can choose how the map appears and functions. If I can get it working, the first choice available to the user will be whether or not to have the regular Slate ground be in the map (good for loading slate saves and/or building floating structures in "space"). A future option may be whether nor not to enable atmospheres.

Yay atmospheres! The map is coming along very nicely, even if the worlds are a cluster of floating cuboid surfaces at the moment.

Well, that was quite a response.

The save is just extra, so that doesn't really bother me that much.
It's good to see you allready know about the interior bug and that you will fix it.

About the moon, well, i do not understand why you can't 'stretch' it a bit downwards so that it forms a bit of a cube, but okay.
The worlds arén't cubes either, so that actually makes sense.

Version 3 is out.

Change log from V2:

*Ambient lighting has been made brighter and more neutral
*Water interior has been fixed
*4 build pads have been added around the spawn world
*Map/loading screen image has been remade

The update is awaiting approval, but the download is available immediately.

An improved environment save is in the works.

What would be fun is to have one of those ? worlds be a large mass of asteroids (destroyed planet?)

And possibly make the moon deeper like a cube, (with a cave or something in it? I would love to see a few floating cave bases, eheheheh)

Though the map is simply epic right now, this map and GSF paradise are my favorites.

I can't find the save! where is it?
