Rave doesn't know what he's talking about half the time.
Smuggler is Rave?

Been playing about 6 or so years now, I personally don't know much about Dean because I've never used them, I know the name and know a few people who have them and like them, but in all honesty, you're better off starting with a better/better known brand such as Fender, Gibson, Ibanez. I personally started on an Acoustic and the moved my way up to Electric once I started recording, and I felt it was much easier to play.

Also, a quick tip, if you're just learning an instrument, don't learn guitar, everyone plays guitar, and quite frankly, its just not unique. I personally wish guitar wasn't my first instrument, but that's just me.

Okay, I'm assuming you're just starting to learn how to play guitar.

With about $300, you can buy maybe a 15W amp and a semi-decent starting guitar (which should actually last a couple years). If I were you, I'd drop some money on an Epiphone guitar to start. My recommendation is the Junior model. It's not the best, but it's definitely up there for starters.

As for an amp, the best brands are probably Peavey and Marshall. Though, being so good, they're also the more expensive brands. Of those, the amps you can buy for around $100 are only 15W. Now, 15W isn't too great, but if you're just starting it should keep you busy for a few months to a year's time. I guess this should work, but it's still not that great.

Still, you could always drop an extra $50-$100 to get a 30W amp of another brand.

Don't listen to this. Learning to play the guitar may not be original or unique, but most people who learn to play it don't go very far with it.

I'm not trying to discourage him, but to be honest, the reason so many people pick up a guitar is stupid, to pick up women. If that's why you're learning, then don't bother, you'll give up after a month.

Also, another thing you'll need, a tuner, the guitar strings are easy to memorize

E- verybody
G- ets
D- runk
A- t
E- ds

And a metronome helps.

You've played 6 years and you don't even know that a guitar has 6 strings? lol

It's EADGBE.

Left is low string, right is high string. I memorized it as "Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears".

a year ago when i was looking for a new acoustic, i was really focused on that. except, it was pretty expensive, and i just settled with something from a local shop. i still wish i could get that though

I prefer Ibanez or Fender guitars.

I have got a Epiphone Les Paul Standard and i fitted it with 12 gauge strings and i also have a Ibanez GRG170DX.
they are both awesome guitars but seeing as you want i good cheap guitar, get the 170DX as you cant beat it in good value for money, it also has a great thin neck for fast playing. i want to Epiphone Explorer gothic so bad D:

Well thanks for the responses, I'm leaning a bit towards what Illidan suggested as I have a Guitar Center no too far from me. Also I have actually been playing an acoustic for a month or so now but my uncle told me it has a longer and wider neck then most guitars he's played, and it's been a pain in the ass to play.
