How do I get to the Shadow Orbs to summon the Eater though if the pickaxe I need to mine the rock around them requires materials only obtainable from the Eater? It's like some kind of paradox

You have two choices.
Use dynamite or since you defeated a boss the Dryad will move in, buy some purification powder and sprinkle it on corruption.

I sometimes defeat the eater of worlds using grenades, I bring about 3 stacks and i have about 1-15 left when i kill it.
