I especially like the organization and the corrupt/jungle tree they have growing.

Same, it's just really neat. I like the naturalness of it, particularly the trees and vines they have growing up top between the second and third towers.

Spend a while mining, get some decent ores like copper and iron, craft some armor and go after a better pick first of all. Maybe then if you wanted to you could survive a night on the surface should you need to.

Started a new world but no new player, Making a fortress on a floating island, Is about 48% complete.

stay on the surface. get STONE, COPPER (shiny brownish red stuff), IRON (browny grey stuff) and WOOD (use axe on base of tree)

Find the NPC known as the guide and build a house by him. Press esc and build a workbench. Place it in your house.
Hopefully while you were gathering supplies you got GEL. Make torches. Stand next to workbench to make furnace.

Smelt bars, but not the copper ones (useless mang) Mix your STONE and COPPER together to make super strong copper brick. Rebuild house out of this.

silly boy, you do realize that ores are more valuable than bars correct? 3 ores = 1 bar, but you get more per 3 ores than one bar.
