Trick that my friend and I did was to find the Jungle Temple and carve out a path all the way around it. You can hammer the blocks of the temple to smooth them out too.

Use this as your track and it makes it easier to navigate around, rather than running randomly through the jungle and getting stuck in dark areas or corners/dead ends.

Plus, if you get a spear-type weapon you can use that as if you keep your path just big enough for your player character a lot of the time Plantera will be in the ground, so you can still prod it to death, but it's not always possible to shoot at you.

You have melee armor but you use ranged weapons. Try using the hallowed ranger set. Less defense, but much more ranged damage.

Some tricks to killing Plantera. If you get a room with a central point and some good wings, you can just fly circles about him. He will never touch you, all you have to worry about are the claws and stuff. Alternatively, you can get a Neptune's shell and fight him underwater, very good mobility.

I just get into hardmode, by now I have a godly night's edge, a mini-shark, and a palladium drill.

I get invaded by pirates, and I die over 25 times during the day, then THE TWINS arrive at night, kill me, then go fly away, I die alot more during the night, and it takes the whole next day for me to kill enough pirates for the invasion to stop. And guess what? The next night is a loving BLOOD MOON during a FULL MOON so that means I have were-wolves up the ass during the night!

Why are you fighting them? If you can't handle all of that, escape underground.

I have to kill like 120 pirates so they go away, so I was kind of forced there.

There's now a ton of graves scattered around, and I ended up getting some gold furniture, and 2 discount cards...

I've actually gotten most all of the PI drops except for the Coin Gun.

Interestingly, immediately after I made that comment I did a Pirate Invasion and got a discount card.

My Terraria days consist of going to the jungle and killing a couple Planteras, then killing some Pirate Invasions. If I remember, I kill Skeletron at night looking for a book of skulls. I ran out of lenses to summon the Eye for those binoculars.

Update: 3 discount cards in probably 10 invasions. It's like it is making fun of me.
