personally i'd try to discover everything by playing the game, not by reading changelogs

then again i knew about a ton of things in advance because i frequently check for terraria news

I always keep a wiki open so i can identify objects and stuff

personally I like having a guide to sift through if i come across something that i can't figure out what to do with it.

The in-game NPC Guide can give you crafting recipes if you're confused on how to use something.

Yeah, he just wants to know however if he can use the items he finds anywhere but at his base. :)
So he just searches them up.
I can see why, though i mostly do it without external guides/wikis/whatever.
Mostly, not fully without.
I still want to know some drop chances and stuff. :)

Kinda similar to that, but instead i keep the essentails right next to each other (anvil, furnace, and workbench). I put a bottle on the workbench for potions
The special crafters (Dye bat, tinkerers workbench, etc) i put wherever i have the room
