The gibus, also known as the opera hat, was invented in 1800–10 and named for its inventor, a 19th century Frenchman. It is a man's tall, collapsible top hat, held open or in shape by springs and usually covered with a black, silky fabric.
The ghost of Zepheniah Mann can be seen wearing this hat while haunting the event version of Harvest.
The Ghastly Gibus bears a striking resemblance to the top hat worn by actor Zeppo Marx in movies such as "Duck Soup"; while unlikely, the resemblance and the fact that Zeppo Marx and Zephaniah Mann share the same initials could be coincidental.
The Ghastly Gibus is somewhat similar to the Scotsman's stove pipe.
The hat may also be a reference to "gib", a term used when a character in a video game is killed in a very gory way, often scattering the characters various body parts apart.
There are claims that the hat is now droppable, due to the fact that people have found without recently completing the achievement, leading to much confusion among the TF2 community.
The amount of people who got one from the secret webpage, 10,319, is the date of Halloween 2009, 10/31/09.
This hat cannot be crafted with a second hat to make a new hat in the same way that most class specific hats and misc items can be.
It was possible to obtain two Ghastly Gibuses: by finding one through the hidden web page, while the giveaway was in practice, and by earning one with the achievement (though this serves no practical purpose, as the Gibus cannot be currently crafted into anything else).
The Gibus was misspelled "Ghostly Gibus" in the TF2 Official Blog. However, it was probably just what the Soldier thought it was named.
Because of how common the hat is, modelers tend to only make their custom hats replace the Gibus.
The Gibus can be 'painted' using the paint can items from the Mann.Co store, when painted, the band at the lower portion of the hat is coloured.(NEW) Through a recent update in TF2 the whole Ghastly Gibus is now painted giving a much better effect on colour.
The Gibus is the most common hat besides the Alien Swarm Parasite.
With the 2010 Halloween Event, the Gibus was renamed the Ghastlier Gibus and remodeled to have a small silver design on the rim. The rim now features a screaming pumpkin and is a darker shade of black. (When not recoloured with paint).
This hat was originally given to those who clicked a link on the TF2 blog. Almost like a chain reaction,, as all you need to do for this is dominate another player.
However, people who gets the Ghastly gibus via the Ghastly Gibus Grab achievement after the Scream Fortress Update will still get the ordinary Ghastly Gibus.
In the map Mann Manor when you walk out of Blue spawn and go to the room to the right look over the hay stacks and there is a Scarecrow with a pink Ghastly Gibus on his head.
It is possible to get BOTH Gibuses. You can have two Ghastly Gibuses and one Ghastlier Gibus.
Since the Gibus is an old top hat, and the Demoman has a top hat, the Demoman must have gone back in time to give his new top hat to Zepheniah Mann. Therefore, the Demoman is a time-travelling wizard
