I just traveled to the north to kill a hydra. Then I went to a castle.

To my surprise it was filled with naked wrestlers, and for once in my life my companions helped me slaughter them all.

Doin' an adventure mode run. Why is combat so addicting? It's insanely satisfying for me to read the play by play of a good battle in my favor, even with no graphics to speak of.

Because it is so descriptive. Modern video game graphics cannot describe to you what dwarf fortress does with words.

The naked wrestlers of the north are awesome for training my new soldiers on. I've dug out my save for my spearwoman, and have now given her an iron two-handed sword. Even though my sword using skill is of the lowest level, I have a 90% chance to cut of any limb with a normal strike.

Started playing again after quite a while, made a nice new fort which I was pretty proud of, got used to the game again.

Then...

All my dwarves got killed by a cyclops.

So much for the iron weaponry I ripped off a merchant for :(

Do drawbridges act as walls when they're retracted up? or will my dwarves still be able to be shot through them/pass through them if there's no channel?

It would probably tell you on the wiki. But I imagine that this game is too good to not have it act as a wall.

They act as walls.
The only difference is the fact that you can't build on top of them.
