OK, two options:

Get a Z68 board for a bit of extra $$$ and use SRT technology with HDD.

OR.

Just get a high-quality P67 board for less money and use the OS on the SSD and use HDD for storage.

Thoughts?

Or just say forget the ssd because there isn't really a big need to start up the os faster and you want to save money.

well I have 1200 giggaboops of dataspace on my hard-rams

i get like 56 pips per tic on steam, like 77 goggspoggs when doing cybermark situation protocols. booyah.

best post in whole thread

sounds good

This.

durrrrrrr my fan's going a little hot

Well, my motherboard can support up to 16GB, but it's DDR2. Is DDR3 worth the upgrade?
It's not an overheating issue, my video card and CPU stay (relatively) cool at 38°C & 47°C, and 46°C & 50°C through a horde, so it's likely the RAM.
I realized the processor is old architecture, yes, but I got it as a gift, so I can't really complain.
It'd be worth upgrading to 4GB of RAM anyway.

What about two hyper 212s in push-pull?
You don't need 2? How would that even work?

Poking around some more, I think I like this one

$55 for 1TB @ 7200 rpm and 6gb/s w/ 32mb cache

I likey, but still; what the heck is the cache/buffer memory?
What HerpaDerp said. Barracuda's are unreliable, all the ones I've had have broken and had collapsed platters after minimal use.

Also, just because something uses the SATA III 3gb/s connection, doesn't mean it's instantly half as fast as something that uses SATA II 6gb/s. That's just the theoretical maximum bandwidth of the SATA platform.

My brother is trying to build a computer with a salvaged case, HDD, and DVD drive, his budget is around $300, and he wants a good GPU (at least enough to support Portal 2.) I'm getting frustrated of him asking what parts are good or not, and I seriously want him to get off my back.
Also, if you could do it on newegg.ca, I would be even more grateful.

Exactly $300.

holy stuff
22 3/4k rpm?

Get a cheap SSD just to start up windows faster, and a few other small programs would be an okay idea. I'd still rather just put extra money towards a better CPU or GPU, imo since I always go towards gaming.

@OP Could you suggest some good gaming monitors?
Budget? Size preferences?

Also, about the SSD debate.
I don't recommend getting a SSD unless you have a Z68 board with SRT Technology, that way it speeds up your whole HDD to speeds similar to that of a SSD, because of caching.
Boot seems like a waste of money when you could just spend a little more on a Z68 board and have it all.

Also, I never said Caviar Green was unreliable, but it's slow, and is considered the base model for their range. If you were to go WD, which I recommend because they make great hard drives, I'd at least go for a blue.

I have a Z68 motherboard and a 64gb SSD but I'd rather have full control over what's on the SSD and store programs and documents on the secondary hard drive.

My main question is what would have if you set a 64 (or more) ssd as virtual page file RAM. Would that be possible if it were an SSD?

all four of my CPU's are at 40oC
feels good man
