Author Topic: What is your opinion? Did you find Half-Life 2 too easy or too slow?  (Read 7716 times)

Could someone tell me why Half-Life 2 is supposed to be the best videogame ever made or something? preferably a valve fanboy like Marcem
Because things are easily overrated, that is life and you'll get used to it.
I actually enjoyed Hl2 but that is just me.

oh i enjoyed hl2 sure but i cant see how its the greatest game ever. far from it infact.

I have to agree, the only time I ever had real trouble with any part in half life 2 was when I was facing that dropship in the prison and it took me a bit to find one of the infinite rocket crates.

Half Life 1 was amazing in both gameplay and immersion, definitely harder but better than Half Life 2.

Don't be surprised if Half-Life 3 has regenerative health, if there is a Half-Life 3. I am beginning to think Valve realized they don't want to make another Half-Life game.

I believe Half-Life 2 was one of the first shooters to try something different and it completely messed up the difficulty curve of your average shooter today. The natural order of balance has been broken.

Did anyone notice Half-Life 2 saves checkpoints every 15-20 feet or after you complete a mini battle of less than 6 combine on screen?

Also I have yet to find an area of the game that makes stealth optional. Half-Life 1 had plenty of stealth sequences.

Yeah HL2 was a bit easy for me but my difficulty was set on easy and it can be slow but thats it's style searching for stuff instead of always running toward something you can actually look at your surroundings. Also at 2 points you drive a car and airboat so I guess the game goes towards: DRIVE FAST CAUSE OSHT THERES A CHOPPER!

The soldiers are actual Combine or some other auxiliary race.
Civil Protection are the humans.

I think it was to make up for how rare checkpoints were in Half Life

I just saved when i was low on health  Problem?

I saved whenever i didn't feel like redoing a certain part over and over every time i died

No, they are purposely trying to make the game easier. Half-Life 1 saves checkpoints halfway through a level or after you beat the level.

Half-Life 2 saves checkpoints after you go about 20 feet or fight a mini battle. Half-Life 2 is literally holding your hand.

Yeah HL2 was a bit easy for me but my difficulty was set on easy

I'm playing Half-Life 2 on hard but it feels easy, I constantly keep checking my difficulty settings to see if I am actually playing hard mode.

Actually, your enemies are indeed programmed to shoot with a lot lower accuracy compared to your allies. The rebels will kill a combine soldier in seconds while the soldiers won't hit the side of a barn.

Fun fact: Half Life 2 striders are programmed to miss their first shots on purpose.

I found this interesting comment somewhere.

You're also the guy who wouldn't stop moaning about the flaws of Oblivion for at least six pages in the megathread. You seem to have a tendency for finding generally well-liked games and whining about their few downfalls.

I have replayed the game at least three times and it does not save that often. It saves in "safe spots." Ravenholm could take 30-45 minutes, if not more, on a first playthrough, and I'm pretty sure there are 3 checkpoints in the entire zone, which is packed chock-full with zombies.

You're also clearly very good at this game. On my first playthrough on Hard I had to replay the one room with a load of manhacks several times over, as they kept on murdering me within seconds.
At the Strider quote: Yes, that is true, but did you know if you don't take cover in time, their next bullets will have 100% accuracy? This is called "walking" the bullets: no matter what direction the player is running in, the 4th or 5th bullet fired will always hit its target. That's called balance, and an interesting machine-like tactic.

All in all, even if the game is still easy, just enjoy it for what it is. The Legend of Zelda games are generally notoriously easy, but also fun as hell and well-loved by just about everyone. Now I'm sure you'll say "so if the main point of the game isn't a challenging shooter, what point is there? The graphics suck and the environment is so unrealistic, after all who would put explosive barrels and medkits everywhere?!"

It's a game. You either like it or you don't, and you are in the minority of not liking it.

I honestly thought the game was pretty easy and pretty boring IMO. It had a damn great story and damn great level design but it could've been executed much better. This is why I love SMOD: Tactical. It's what HL2 should've been like. The only thing it lacks is a campaign which is why im using SMOD as a base for a mod.

I'm the guy that doesn't see the same deal as the others who claim the best game ever is indeed the best game ever.

I noticed it saves pretty often. I go into a house it checkpoints, I go jump to another house it check points, etc. Then at the car part it checkpoints after you reach a house and it checkpoints again after you clear out the enemies from that house. A few times I noticed some checkpoints in the middle of the road.

That's just it, I don't even need to be good at the game. My ideal strategy so far has been standing still and absorbing damage. I don't even need to try as the combines die so incredibly easy and they miss 80% of their shots and the fact that there is at least 4 medpacks less than 10 feet of me all the time I don't have to worry about health.

The striders usually miss most of the time for me even if I am standing still.

Which Legend of Zelda games are you talking about? The Water Temple in ocarina of time was pretty hard and complex. Some of the other puzzles in the Legend of Zelda series are harder than that and more complex than those weight puzzles in Half-Life 2.

I don't see the point you are driving at after the Legend of Zelda part. I also noticed you were quoting something hence the "" but that can't be something I've said because I never said that.

It's certainly not the best game ever. I just think it deserves more credit than you're giving it.

I noticed it saves pretty often. I go into a house it checkpoints, I go jump to another house it check points, etc. Then at the car part it checkpoints after you reach a house and it checkpoints again after you clear out the enemies from that house. A few times I noticed some checkpoints in the middle of the road.

To be honest, I only remember the checkpoints in tunnels. It didn't seem like a big deal to me and replaying 10+ minutes of a challenging area just makes most people want to quit after one or two times. Since it is not a hard game and Valve is trying to make checkpoints that will work for the general population, they won't delete a few extra checkpoints because some players find it too easy.

That's just it, I don't even need to be good at the game. My ideal strategy so far has been standing still and absorbing damage. That's just you then. When switching from Normal to Hard difficulty I noticed the Shotgun-Troops especially have a decent amount of armor. And once you get later into the game there is a lack of healthpacks, only in small select areas every 10-15 minutes.

The striders usually miss most of the time for me even if I am standing still.

That probably shouldn't happen.

Which Legend of Zelda games are you talking about? The Water Temple in ocarina of time was pretty hard and complex. Some of the other puzzles in the Legend of Zelda series are harder than that and more complex than those weight puzzles in Half-Life 2.

We're talking about how the fighting aspects of Half-Life 2 are easy, I'm talking about how the fighting aspects of LoZ, especially the bosses, are easy. And I agree, those "puzzles" are stupid and just to show off Valve's now-nearly-outdated-physics system.

I don't see the point you are driving at after the Legend of Zelda part. I also noticed you were quoting something hence the "" but that can't be something I've said because I never said that.

From your previous posts, I can imagine you criticizing the realism and environment part of the game if I said it's not intended only as a challenging shooter game.
