I think it's design is supposed to be inspired by pokeballs, not necessarily a copy of a pre-existing one.
But who knows, we might see a magearna style pokeball in the movie.

What if it's small like an inactive Pokeball, but when you press the button on it, it grows to the size of a beach ball, and instead of summoning the contained Pokemon with the usual red beam of energy, Magearna pops out from the top and the bottom opens up to reveal their legs?
