You proceed to pick up the sword and take a swing at it. The blade cracks in half and the shard flies into the ground.
And that's why. You might be able to repair it into something decent.

You need to research the current weapons to see the next branch. It's only meant to be a teaser.

Oh wait.
We don't have a crafting table.
Take the swords, see if you can reforge them into something more...
Intact.

Find resources to turn shards into a frag grenade!

Find resources to turn shards into a frag grenade!

That's not how it works.
Fragmentation Grenades are composed of a metallic shell, which can fragement into shrapnel, making the bomb much more deadly. It also contains "Composition B", and explosive compound used to break apart and launch the fragmented shell. The "trigger" and the safety pin would also need to be included, as well as a M213 fuse, if you were building a M67 or C13 Frag. Basically, just using shrapnel as... well, shrapnel in a Fragmentation Grenade doesn't work.

Do-do-do-dooo!
It takes you an hour, but you have (1x) Refurbished Imp Short Sword. Sure it's a little weaker, but hey, it didn't cost you a dime.
You now have two swords.

WITH a sharper blade, and blades coming off of it.

Hey, guys. Question. Do you want to give imp sword to Kevlar-Steve or yourself?

WITH a sharper blade, and blades coming off of it.

No, that's stupid.
The blade would get caught inside the flesh of the victim, and while the would do much, much more damage, you have to spend a good five or so minutes getting it back out.

Give it to yourself. Kevlar Steve doesn't really have much going for him, so we shouldn't give him the sucky blade.
When the sword gets reforged, give it to Kevlar Steve if it's better than what you have.

Fine, just a sharper, cooler looking blade.

optionally take the rest of the fragments and sharpen them for throwing

I'll keep using the gladius for the short sword, maybe for a badass sword I'll use one of your designs

You give the Kevlar-Steve the normal short sword.
