Author Topic: gimmicky-ass TDMs and HOLY stuff STOP IT  (Read 18122 times)

Good point.

People these days just aren't as original as people used to be. Back then you would actually find servers each with a different theme or whatever. Now everything is basically the same.

that's because most of the things have already been thought of, and then multiple people do them, and then it's not original anymore

Here's a fun game to play

OT: So Blockland is turning into Final Destination: The Game?

Nobot's Death race was fun, also what happened to the deathrun servers? Those seem to have died out too along with some zombie ones.

I don't know if either of these count as not "stuffty" TDMs but these are some different forms of entertainment I've been making.

  • Neighborhood TDM - 3 modern houses - Fight on the streets of your neighborhood - Choose classes that relate to your position in the family (dad, mom, son, ect.
  • Helgen Dragon Defense - From Skyrim - you are in helgen and players have to work together to kill the dragon (boss) that is attacking helgen (the boss is controlled by a player, randomly picked player). A different spin from sit around and shoot a giant red guy in a suit.

gimmicky but interesting parody of a family RP

alternately people will think you're being completely serious, and the server will be undermined simply by stuffty playerbase

this still relies on the boss battle formula, which means that this could still be absolute stuff if you don't balance the boss and players just right.

for further reference: balance means more then 'both sides are able to win'- it also implies that the weapons are neither underpowered (killing in way too loving many hits) or overpowered (killing in way too few). there's a bit of depth that goes into thought like this and it's best you actually edit the .cs files so you have a fun (and customized) server

also, don't use the stock medieval equipment. i've got nothing against badspot but good lord they're simply no fun to use

i might actually put a little time aside to help you out with this if you can't find anything worth using, but no promises

Boss battles could be fun, if done right.

It would take a lot of time and effort though. Considering actual player models, arenas, weapons, bug smashing / balancing.

But, I think that is part of the reason for servers with minimal quality. Hosters may be working on their servers on their own, or with a handful of people. Their interest levels will most likely decline soon if they don't have a finished project within at least a month or less. Though this can be enough time for a decent server, we need to consider time constraints, writers "builders" block, and lack of motivation (though this can be fatal to a server).

If someone just simply dedicated himself and a "staff" to simply take one idea and slowly add-on to it over half a year or a full year, you may end up with a server with great gameplay / quality. The thing is just staying motivated...

If i could i would salvage strato's old WWII set, build a wake island, and have a good ol' fashioned dog fight. too loving bad i can't.

Time to make a gimmicky ass TDM that everyone will go to  :cookieMonster:. Also do zombie servers count?

work with what you have

we've got dozens of weapon packs and plenty of ways to circumvent a lack of terrain

hell, i just put together a bunch of floating islands and people want to dogfight over it all over the place

wait.
(grapple) knife TDM's are supposed to be flat.
bland flat tops is the point
"pixel art" on the top make it look more interesting as a whole
knife TDM's would be hard to navigate on if an entire mountain was put in it.

The problem isn't maps, I've built TDM maps up the ass, the problem is that my laptop can't host for stuff. Whenever I host anyone who joins has a chance of actually crashing my server.

don't make up stuffty examples like that. dodging around by just making another even worse argument doesn't solve anything

flat-top knife dms are atrocities simply because that's all there is to them. you can have a complex melee dm, requiring thought and intuition and a bit of random chance, without sacrificing anything or anyone besides the scrubs* who only play to win

i mean, yes, winning is also fun, but winning should not be the point of any game. it should be the end goal, but the point of any game is to have fun

and something interesting and varied like this:

is infinitely more fun then final destination

*technical terminology by the way

did you even read any of the OP, by the way? or did you just cut out halfway through when i started ragging on knife dms

bushi knows his stuff well.

you've encouraged me to make a good damn DM

I like dms more than tdms, because dms will teach you more of how to deal with crowds or the distrust of others. Yours in particular, as it contains many areas where one could appear to have died but be very much alive.
